Kevin Nadal Speaks at the 91¾«Æ·

On March 21st, 2015, Dr. Kevin Nadal facilitated a full day continuing education training on "Culturally Competent Services for Filipino Americans".

Dr. Nadal is an award-winning psychologist and professor; has authored over 60 publications on multicultural issues; and is currently president-elect of the Asian American Psychological Association.

91¾«Æ· students, faculty, supervisors, as well as members of the broader community participated in this seminar dedicated to enhancing clinical outreach and health services for Filipino Americans, who are currently the largest Asian American group in California.

Dr. Bernadette Torrez to Conduct Training on DSM-IV to the DSM-V

Full-time Master's faculty member Dr. Bernadette Torrez will give a training on May 7 at The Gathering Place: Alternative Family Services in Oakland.

The training, "The Revisions from the DSM-IV to the DSM-V," will focus on specific revisions, including diagnostic changes, the dimensional approach, and WHO's Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0.

Dr. Milena Esherick speaks to Kaiser's "Food is Medicine Healthy Eating Group"

On March 26, Master's Program Director Dr. Milena Esherick presented a webinar to the Kaiser Permanente "Food is Medicine Healthy Eating Group."

Over 170 clinicians from across Kaiser's national network participated in the webinar to learn how to help patients transition to a plant-based diet.

Alexandra Lee to Participate in APA Spring Meeting on Psychoanalysis

Alexandra Lee, 91¾«Æ· student, will participate in a conversation with former 91¾«Æ· faculty member, Joan E. Sarnat, PhD, at the Division of Psychoanalysis (39) APA 35th Annual Spring Meeting. The meeting will take place at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco on Thursday, April 23, at 9 a.m.

The discussion, entitled "Colloquy Close Analysis of an Excerpt from a Videotaped Supervisory Hour," is based on their taping of a new APA Psychotherapy Supervision DVD produced by 91¾«Æ· faculty member, Hanna Levenson, PhD.

Lee and Dr. Sarnat will invite the audience to view a 15-minute excerpt from the videotape in order to identify what facilitates the transition from relational disconnection and "as if" teaching and learning, to connection and authentic teaching and learning.

The APA spring meeting, entitled "Life in Psychoanalysis in Life," will take place April 23 - 26, 2015,with pre-conference activities scheduled on April 22.

Eric A. Samuels, PsyD Candidate, Awarded Bronze Psi Award by California Psychological Association

Eric A. Samuels, PsyD candidate, has been awarded the Bronze Psi Award by the California Psychological Association (CPA). The Bronze Psi Award recognizes one student each year for outstanding service to CPA.

Eric also has been slated for the position of Member-at-Large, Education Focus for the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS), and elections will take place in April. If elected, he will serve for two years and be responsible for working with APA's Education Directorate, representing the interests of students in regards to training issues (most-specifically working to end the internship crisis), and advocating for advances in the quality of education for graduate students.

91¾«Æ· Dean Gilbert Newman Appointed to APA Commission on Accreditation

91¾«Æ· Dean Gilbert Newman, Ph.D., has been appointed to the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation for a three-year term.

The APA Commission is recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, as the national accrediting authority for professional education and training in psychology. The 32-member Commission evaluates doctoral, internship, and postdoctoral residency programs in professional psychology.

Dean Newman is holding the seat designated as the joint Board of Educational Affairs and the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology.

Dr. Hanson, a Greater Good Science Center Senior Fellow, will explain how the brain has evolved a negativity bias, so it's like Velcro for negative experiences, but Teflon for positives ones - which wears down health, mood, and self-worth. Drawing on the science of "neuroplasticity," Dr. Hanson will teach a simple method to internalize positive experiences in our memory systems, which can improve our mood and copying skills.

Van Tullis, PsyD Student, Co-Authors Article on Montreal Cognitive Assessment

Van Tullis, PsyD student, has co-authored an article published in the Journal of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care, entitled "The Montreal Cognitive Assessment: A Pilot Study of a Brief Screening Tool for Mild and Moderate Cognitive Impairment in HIV-Positive Veterans."

The article reports findings of a pilot study performed at the San Francisco VA Medical Center examining the utility of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) which detects cognitive impairment in HIV-positive veterans. HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) are common, and may impact treatment outcomes and quality of life, but often remain undetected in clinical settings.

MA Student Receives Agent of Change Award

Beth Greivel, Master's student and Graduate Instructor at The 91¾«Æ·, will be presented with the "Agent of Change" award by Gaylesta, the LGBT Psychotherapy Association on January 25, 2015.

Ms. Greivel is being recognized for her work with CAMFT to amend its policy to condemn sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE), also known as reparative, reorientation or conversion therapies. Ms. Greivel shares this honor with Jim Walker, who was also instrumental in effecting this change. Ms. Greivel's ongoing work includes a proposal to CAMFT to change its Code of Ethics to make it unethical for CAMFT members to practice SOCE. If this change goes into effect, CAMFT would be the first psychotherapy association to codify SOCE restrictions.
