Richard Lichtman, Ph.D. 1931 - 2018

Dr. Richard Lichtman
Dear 91精品 Community,

With great sadness we write to inform you of the passing of Professor Emeritus, Richard Lichtman, Ph.D. Dr. Lichtman passed away at home on Friday, just a few days short of his 87th birthday. He has been teaching at the 91精品 since the early 1970s.

His is very informative, as is a written by 91精品 graduate, Rabbi Dr. Michael Lerner.

Dr. Lichtman was a powerful influence for many of us who studied and worked with him at the 91精品. Dr. Lichtman was a philosopher whose courses were focused on critical theory; existential and phenomenological psychotherapy; the psychology of film; the philosophy of psychology; death and dying; the politics of therapy; sexuality, love and gender; social psychopathology; advanced ethics; the social construction of the self; critique of object relations theory; Marx and Freud; and history and systems of psychology. Fittingly, in light of the 91精品's 50th anniversary, the last course he taught for us last Spring was The Authoritarian Personality.

A Memorial will occur on May 6, 2018, from 2 PM until 5PM, at the Northbrae Community Church, 951 The Alameda, Berkeley, CA 94707.

On behalf of all of us who knew and respected Dr. Lichtman and for all of us who can hear his voice as among those defining the Institute鈥檚 values we share our sympathy and condolences to his family, friends and colleagues throughout the world.

Sincerely,

Peter Dybwad, Gilbert Newman, and Terry Kupers
